The Mesa Laboratory, I. M. Pei's building for the atmospheric scientists

The National Center for Atmospheric Research wanted a laboratory that would not look dropped onto the mesa, and Pei answered in 1961 with towers of bush hammered concrete built from local aggregate, shaped after Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings. It was his first commission that was not a city building, and he named it among his favourites. Climate, weather and space weather research has run out of it since, and the ground floor is open to visitors.
