The Crossroads mall was dying until it became Bellevue's living room

Crossroads opened in 1962 as half a million square feet of open air shops, was enclosed in the 1970s, and then lost its trade to Bellevue Square. Ron Sher took it over in 1988 and rebuilt it around small independent restaurants, a public stage with live music several nights a week and a permanent chess table. It became the gathering place for the immigrant neighbourhoods that grew up on farmland Japanese families had worked until 1942.
