Severance Center opens as Ohio's first enclosed mall
1963
Cleveland Heights, Ohio
Doors opened on 17 October 1963 on the first fully enclosed regional mall in Ohio, anchored by the Cleveland department stores Halle's and Higbee's. It was built on the estate of industrialist John L. Severance, the same patron who paid for Severance Hall, after his nephew moved out in 1960. The enclosed mall was later torn out and replaced with an open air power centre, several of whose anchor boxes now sit empty.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
