Kemper Freeman Sr. Began buying this land in 1944 and opened Bellevue Square on 20 August 1946, the first regional suburban shopping centre in the Pacific Northwest. Frederick and Nelson arrived before the year was out, the first shopping centre department store Marshall Field built anywhere in the country. His father was Miller Freeman, who had spent decades campaigning against Japanese residents of the Eastside, and the family built on a Bellevue emptied of its farmers. The centre now draws over twenty million visits a year.
