Big Town Mall was the first enclosed shopping mall in the Southwest
Mesquite, Texas
Air conditioning under one roof was the selling point when this mall opened just over the Dallas line in Mesquite in 1959, the first fully enclosed shopping centre in the Southwest. It pulled shoppers out of downtown Dallas for two decades before newer malls further out pulled them away again. Montgomery Ward, the last anchor left, closed in March 2001, and the buildings came down in 2006.
