The Los Angeles Motordrome builds the first board speedway in America

Jack Prince had spent years building wooden velodromes for bicycle racing, and in 1910 he laid the same idea out at one mile across for cars and motorcycles on the bluff above Playa del Rey. The track was a circle of planks with no corners to brake for, so drivers ran it flat out, and it drew big paying crowds from the start. Seventeen more board tracks went up around the country over the next sixteen years, all copying this one. Fire destroyed it in 1913 and it was never rebuilt.
