The Harlem Race Track sits empty because Illinois would not tolerate the betting
1894
Forest Park, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A syndicate led by George Hankins built this track in the village of Harlem, now Forest Park, in 1894 and meant to open for the 1895 season. Public feeling against gambling ran strong enough that it never did. The place stood finished and idle at heavy cost to the investors until it was sold off in 1897. Its ground ran roughly between what are now Roosevelt Road and 16th Street.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
