The Andover Village mill district, and the split that made North Andover
1855
Andover, Massachusetts

Locals still call this stretch of the Shawsheen River simply the Village. Mills clustered along it through the 19th century and pulled the town's centre of gravity south, away from the older farming settlement upriver. In 1855 that rural half gave up and became a separate town, North Andover.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
