Grand Rapids becomes Furniture City
1876
Grand Rapids, Michigan
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Grand Rapids makers took the medal at the 1876 Centennial and the city became the furniture capital of America, with hardwood forests upriver and a river to power the mills. The industry moved south in the 1930s. What stayed behind was the office furniture trade.
