John and William Marland and their partners bought the mill privilege on the Shawsheen River in 1836 and built the first planned mill community in Andover around it. The Ballardvale mills turned out flannels and worsted goods and claimed the first wool worsted made in America. The village of mill housing, church and rail stop is intact enough to have been listed on the National Register in 1982.
