Tempe High School, founded because the college stopped taking eighth graders
1908
Tempe, Arizona
The Normal School in Tempe, which grew into Arizona State University, stopped enrolling students who held only an eighth grade diploma, which left the town with nowhere to send its teenagers. Tempe voters created a high school district in 1908 and classes met in rented rooms downtown for the first year. The school's own building opened in 1909 at Mill Avenue and University Drive, and the campus moved to this site in 1953.
