UMass Lowell started as a school for mill technicians

The Lowell Textile School was chartered in 1895 to train technicians and managers for the corporations that ran the city, and opened in February 1897 with thirty two students in three rented rooms on Middle Street. It was renamed Lowell Technological Institute in 1954, then merged in 1975 with Lowell State College, which had grown out of the 1894 Lowell Normal School. The combined university joined the UMass system in 1991 and now enrols more than 18,000 students, the largest in the Merrimack Valley.
