Sycamore Island, the last private undeveloped island in the county
2007
Blawnox, Pennsylvania
Fourteen acres of silt in the Allegheny River off Blawnox, this was the last privately owned undeveloped island left in Allegheny County. What grows on it is a floodplain hardwood forest, one of the rarer plant communities anywhere, and the county's natural heritage inventory rates the stretch of river around it as highly significant. The Allegheny Land Trust bought it in December 2007 with funding from the Colcom Foundation.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
