The Eagle Tree, the sycamore that marked Rancho San Pedro
1857
Compton, California
Surveyors fixed on this California sycamore in December 1857 as the natural corner marking the edge of Rancho San Pedro, and travellers used it the same way, since it stood alone above fields of wild mustard. Age estimates put its start somewhere between the 1670s and the 1730s, which makes it older than the grant it came to define. It was dead by 2015 and blew down on 7 April 2022, crushing a parked car. Cuttings taken beforehand are being grown on as replacements.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
