Dissenters who followed Dominic Kolasinski out of St. Albertus started a parish outside the authority of the Detroit diocese and hired Spier and Rohns to design it. The cornerstone went down in 1892 and the church was dedicated on Christmas Eve 1893, the largest Catholic church in Michigan. Its windows were made by the Detroit Glass Works and took awards at the 1893 world's fair in Chicago. The diocese finally received Kolasinski and his congregation in February 1894.
