Sacred Heart, the church Lawrence's French Canadians built

French Canadians came down to the Lawrence mills by the thousands and worshipped first at St. Anne's, across the river. Sacred Heart started as its mission on the South Lawrence side and grew into five buildings between 1899 and 1936, the stone Gothic Revival church among them. The Archdiocese of Boston sold the whole complex in 2004 to help cover its abuse settlements, and the buildings were listed on the National Register seven years later.
