The church was built in 1864 for a congregation of Irish labourers and became a cathedral in 1937 when Rome cut the Diocese of Camden out of Trenton. It has been the mother church of Catholic South Jersey ever since. Clergy of the diocese ran the 1955 campaign against naming a Delaware River bridge after Walt Whitman, and the diocesan newspaper carried the case.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
