The parish was founded in 1869 and grew into the biggest German speaking Catholic congregation in the city. Cudell and Richardson designed the Gothic church in Amherst sandstone, begun in 1873, first used in 1876 and dedicated in 1881. German and Hungarian woodworkers in the parish carved the interior themselves, and the organ and frescoes followed in 1886 and 1893.
