St. Albertus, the mother church of Polish Detroit, and the riot of 1885

Three hundred Polish families organised this parish in 1871 and it became the parent of more than thirty Polish Catholic churches in the city. The present building was dedicated in July 1885, the largest Catholic church in Michigan at the time and the first in Detroit with steam heat and electric light. That November the diocese suspended the popular pastor, Dominic Kolasinski, and the parish split into factions. A 24 year old named John Lewicki was killed in the disorder on Christmas Day. The parish closed in 1990 and volunteers have kept the building since.
