Sunnyside Yard
1910
Sunnyside, Queens
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Pennsylvania Railroad finished a 192 acre coach yard in Sunnyside in 1910 to store and service the trains using its new Pennsylvania Station, reached under the river through the East River tunnels. It was laid with nearly 26 miles of track and it walls Sunnyside off from Astoria along the whole northern edge of the neighbourhood. Harold Interlocking inside the yard, where Amtrak's Northeast Corridor crosses the Long Island Rail Road main line and the Hell Gate line, has been described as one of the busiest rail junctions in the United States.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
