St. Joseph's, Brooklyn's only women's college
1916
245 Clinton Avenue, Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood founded it in 1916 under Mother Mary Louis, so that Brooklyn women who could not board upstate could take a degree and go home at night. It moved to Clinton Avenue in 1918, into the mansion belt that Standard Oil money had built a generation earlier. It stayed the borough's only women's college until the charter was amended in 1970 to admit men.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
