Webster University opens as a Catholic women's college

The Sisters of Loretto laid the cornerstone on 1 November 1915 for Loretto College, one of the first Catholic colleges west of the Mississippi to grant degrees to women. It admitted men in 1962, went independent and non denominational in 1967, opened a campus in Geneva in 1978 and took the name Webster University in 1983. Its alumni now number roughly 200,000 worldwide.
