St. Florian, the Gothic church Polish factory workers paid for
1928
Hamtramck, Michigan

The parish was founded in 1907 for Polish Catholics arriving to work at the Dodge plant, and the money for this building came out of their wages. Father John Bonkowski hired Ralph Adams Cram of Boston, the leading Gothic Revival architect in the country, to design it. Finished in 1928, it is still the tallest structure in Hamtramck and its outline is used in the city's own logo.
