SS Red Oak Victory, a Richmond built ship kept as a museum
1944
Richmond, California
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
One of 534 Victory ships built during the war, launched from the Richmond yards in 1944 and, unusually for the class, transferred from the merchant marine to the Navy. She carries the name of Red Oak, Iowa, a town that lost a disproportionate share of its men early in the fighting. She is tied up at the old shipyard and open to visitors.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
