Squantum Point builds 35 destroyers, then teaches the Naval Reserve to fly

The Navy threw up an emergency yard on this point in 1918, and the Victory Destroyer Plant finished 35 Clemson class destroyers before it closed in 1920. The airfield beside it was commissioned in 1923 as the first air base in the Naval Reserve program, and it trained American and British aviators through the Second World War. Flying ended in 1953 when the work moved to South Weymouth. A 2,700 foot strip of the old runway still runs through what is now a state park.
