Long Beach Naval Shipyard, the Navy's West Coast repair yard
1943
Terminal Island, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Opened on Terminal Island during the Second World War, the yard spent half a century overhauling the surface fleet and homeporting auxiliary ships. Its enormous graving docks could take a battleship. The base closure round of the 1990s shut it in 1997 and the port took the land for container terminals.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
