The steel mill that was going to give the West Coast to Kirkland

Peter Kirk founded the Great Western Iron and Steel Company in the 1890s to smelt local ore into rails, and his investors expected it to hold a practical monopoly on Pacific Coast steel production. The Panic of 1893 bankrupted the company with the mill all but finished, and it never made a single ton. A scholar writing in 1962 called it the last serious attempt by private capital to put an integrated steel mill on the West Coast.
