Buffington Harbor, the cement plant that poured Gary and the Panama Canal
1903
Gary, Indiana
Illinois Steel started building a Portland cement mill here in 1903, grinding blast furnace slag together with limestone to turn mill waste into a saleable product. It supplied concrete for the new city of Gary and for the Panama Canal, and under Universal Portland Cement it grew into the largest cement works in the country. US Steel opened a deep water port alongside it in 1927, and casino boats took over the harbour in the 1990s.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
