Victor Gruen turned the shops inward around a climate controlled garden court so that Minnesota weather stopped deciding whether people went shopping. It opened in 1956 as the first fully enclosed, climate controlled mall in the United States and became the template copied thousands of times over. Gruen had meant it as an argument against the car centred country going up around it, and he came to disown what developers made of the idea.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
