Maryvale Shopping City, Victor Gruen's mall in the desert
1959
Maryvale, Phoenix, Arizona
Victor Gruen, the architect who invented the enclosed shopping mall, designed this centre for John F. Long, and it opened in 1959 at a cost of 18 million dollars. Nineteen stores across 111,000 square feet made it the biggest shopping mall between Dallas and the Pacific coast, with a bowling alley attached. The Cartwright Elementary School District bought the property in the late 1990s.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
