Northland Center, the first regional shopping centre
1954
Southfield, Michigan

Victor Gruen laid out a ring of shops around a four level Hudson's on 159 acres of Southfield, and it opened in March 1954 as the largest shopping centre in the world. It was open air at first and only enclosed in 1975. Everything that followed, in every suburb in the country, is a copy of the idea tested here. It closed in 2015.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
