Victor Gruen and Elsie Krummeck designed a department store for Westchester with 220 parking spaces on its roof, reached by two ramps that cross the back of the building in an enormous X. It opened in March 1949 and folded the work of a five storey store into one floor a driver could park on top of. Gruen went on to invent the enclosed shopping mall, and this is where the thinking started.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
