The Cosmos Club, one of two women's clubs in the village then called Niles Center, organised a library in 1929 and opened it the following February with a thousand books and ten hours a week of service. Voters made it tax supported in 1941, and it finally got a building of its own across from village hall in 1960. In 2008 it became the first public library in Illinois to win the National Medal for Museum and Library Service.
