The Alexandria library sit-in, twenty years before the lunch counters
1939
Alexandria, Virginia
On 21 August 1939 five Black men walked into the whites-only Alexandria Public Library, took books off the shelves and sat down to read. The attorney Samuel Wilbert Tucker had organised it deliberately as a test case against the library's segregation. Police removed the men and charged them with disorderly conduct, and the judge simply never ruled. Alexandria threw out the charges in 2019.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
