The first free public library
1833
Peterborough, New Hampshire
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
In 1833 the town meeting of Peterborough voted to spend public money on books any citizen could borrow, which made its town library the first free, tax-supported public library in the world. The idea seemed small and local and turned out to be neither. The library is still going, still municipal, still lending.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
