Raymond Almirall's domed Beaux-Arts library got one wing built before the money ran out in 1918, and the stump sat at Grand Army Plaza for seventeen years. Githens and Keally redesigned what was left as an Art Deco fan that reads as an open book from the air, and it finally opened on 1 February 1941 behind fifty foot columns and a bronze screen of literary characters by Thomas Hudson Jones. Brooklyn's library system has never merged with New York's.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
