Seminary South opens as Fort Worth's first shopping mall, then becomes a mercado

Sears built this through its Homart development arm on the filled bed of Katy Lake, and it opened on 14 March 1962 with twenty-four stores, a Mid-Century Modern open-air plan and a seven storey office tower. Four architecture firms from Fort Worth, Dallas, Chicago and New York worked on it. The centre was roofed over in 1987 as Fort Worth Town Center, lost most of its anchors by the early 2000s, and reopened in 2005 as La Gran Plaza, rebuilt around an indoor mercado for a largely Latin American trade.
