Desert Sky Mall, the west Phoenix shopping centre that turned into a mercado
1981
Maryvale, Phoenix, Arizona
Westcor opened this mall in March 1981 as Westridge, anchored by Sears, JCPenney and Diamond's. Over the next thirty years the neighbourhoods around it became largely Mexican and Central American, and in 2010 the empty Mervyn's box reopened as Mercado de los Cielos, a hall of more than forty independent food, jewellery and craft stalls. The mall did not die the way its suburban contemporaries did.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
