Scyene refused to pay for a depot and the railroad made Mesquite instead

The settlement went by Thorpville and Prairie Creek before a post office fixed the name Scyene in 1854. By 1873 it had around 300 people, a Masonic lodge, a wagon factory and six saloons, and Myra Shirley, later known as Belle Starr, had moved here with her family during the Civil War. When the Texas and Pacific asked the town to pay for its own depot, Scyene refused, the line went to Mesquite, and the town faded into a street name and an east Dallas neighbourhood.
