Fourteen families had already settled here under the Peters colony, calling the place Pilot Knob and then Waintown. The town proper dates from 7 November 1881, when the Texas and Pacific authorised a depot with switches and side tracks at the base of Hickory Hill Road. A railroad surveyor supplied the name Argyle, though nobody agrees whether he meant the Scottish county or a garden in France.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
