Murphy gave up the name Maxwell for a railroad depot

Comfort and Lydia McMillen arrived from Arkansas in 1846 and settled on a creek that took the name of Lydia's brothers, the Maxwells, and the settlement was called Maxwell's Branch for forty years. In 1888 William Murphy donated the land for a depot on the St. Louis Southwestern and the railroad put his name on the map instead. It shipped cotton, corn and onions off the blackland prairie until the suburbs reached it: 3,099 people lived here in 2000 and 21,013 did in 2020.
