Rocky River starts out as a lakefront resort at the end of a short railroad

The Clifton Park Association bought up the lakeshore and the east river bank here and ran it as a summer resort, with a hotel, a dance hall, bathing beaches, beer gardens and boats for hire. The Rocky River Railroad was laid out in 1869 to carry Clevelanders the few miles out to it. The resort trade faded but the visitors stayed. The place became a hamlet in 1891, a village in 1903 and a city in 1930.
