Scottdale grows up around George Washington Scott's cotton mill

The Scottdale Cotton Mill went up around 1901 and the village went up with it: worker housing south of the mill, a company store, a clinic, a shared laundry and a clubhouse where children were minded through the shifts. Colonel George Washington Scott, who also bankrolled Agnes Scott College, gave the settlement his name. A mill school followed in 1924 and the company fielded a baseball team into the 1940s. The mill shut in 1982 and the workers scattered across metro Atlanta.
