Eastside Park, where Paterson's silk owners lived above the mills

The city bought Colonel Derrom's sixty six acres on the east side and had the park laid out in 1899 by John Y. Culyer, who had worked as an engineer on both Central Park and Prospect Park in New York. The manufacturers and politicians who ran Paterson built their houses around it while the city was turning out a large part of the country's silk, and the neighbourhood emptied out as the mills closed. The historic district listed in 2004 counts about 790 contributing buildings, running from full mansions down to small workers' houses at the edges.
