The tidal canal that turned Alameda into an island

Oakland's harbour plan called for a canal cut clean through the neck of the Alameda peninsula so that tidal water from San Leandro Bay would scour the shipping channel and hold down the dredging bill. The digging went in two stretches, 1889 to 1892 and 1901 to 1903, and the water broke through on 7 August 1902. Alameda has been an island since that afternoon, and the estuary is the strait that separates it from the Oakland shore.
