San Jose Estates, the land boom that stopped at 31 houses

The San Jose Estates Company bought a thousand acres of the old San Jose plantation in January 1925 and laid out a Spanish styled suburb along the river road south of the city. The Florida land boom broke before it could be built out, and by 1928 only 31 of the hundreds of planned houses stood. The plan had been sold on its amenities, and the hotel, the country club and the sales office all went up before the buyers stopped coming. What did get built was later listed on the National Register as a group.
