Epping Forest, Alfred I. duPont's estate on the St Johns
1927
Jacksonville, Florida
DuPont left Delaware for Jacksonville in the mid 1920s and bought a riverfront site inside the stalling San Jose Estates development that had been set aside for a hotel that was never built. The 58 acre estate was finished in 1927 for him and his wife Jessie Ball duPont, and it became the base for the Florida business empire they ran through the Depression. It went on the National Register in 1973 and is now the Epping Forest Yacht Club. The Florida chapter of the American Institute of Architects later named it one of a hundred notable places in the state's architecture.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
