Runyon Heights, the Yonkers subdivision that left the covenant out
1910
Runyon Heights, Yonkers, New York
Almost every Yonkers subdivision sold in the early 1900s carried a covenant barring non-white buyers. The developers who cut Nepperhan into house lots in the 1910s left those clauses out and ran advertisements in Harlem's Black newspapers, and a Black middle class bought in. The streets were laid so that almost nothing runs through to the white subdivision next door, and a cemetery, a parkway and Tuckahoe Road close off the other sides.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
