Edina's Country Club district and its racial covenants

Thorpe Brothers laid the district out in the early 1920s on the model of J.C. Nichols' Country Club District in Kansas City, with uniform Period Revival houses and a landowners' covenant fixing trees, garages and paint colours. The same covenant barred sale or rent to anyone outside the white race. The Supreme Court made such clauses unenforceable in 1948, but the University of Minnesota's Mapping Prejudice project has found roughly 2,800 Edina deeds still carrying them on paper, more than 500 of those here, and the city council voted in 2021 to renounce and discharge them.
