Clinton Park, built for Black buyers shut out everywhere else
1940
Clinton Park, Houston, Texas
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Segregation closed most Houston subdivisions to Black buyers, so this one was laid out for them in the early 1940s and marketed to middle class Black families, within walking distance of port and ship channel work. It is counted among the first planned communities built for African Americans in Texas. It is still almost entirely Black, still cut off by the industry that gave it its reason to exist.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
